Police Telecommunications

The Rajasthan Police Wireless Organisation made its modest beginning in 1949-50. Twelve wireless stations were set up with equipment left over from the Second World War. These wireless stations had a total strength of about two dozen men and the focus was on the anti-dacoity operations. Within four years the number of wireless stations increased to 99 and the staff to 323-and since then, it has kept on increasing over the years.

During the 1960s, as a result of movement of organised criminal gangs and problems relating to the international border, there was a need to increase the staff strength as well as give them proper training. As technology changed so did the needs of the police. Latest equipments were procured and men were trained to handle these modern equipments. A Research and Development wing was also established. Over the years, all the towns with a population of over one lakh were provided with wireless facilities. It also became an indispensable part of police stations, patrol cars and beat constables. Today, wireless communication is playing a very important role in police work and this fact is acknowledged by its inclusion in the various courses in the police academy and other training centres. More qualified staff, including engineers and science graduates, are also being enrolled.

Gradually, work has increased and so have the facilities and the training imparted to the staff. Work is now on to further upgrade these facilities and today, the wireless facilities are able to provide valuable help to the administration in relief and rescue during floods, famine, locust danger, strikes, elections, VIP and other duties for flashing information regarding the maintenance of law and order. In addition to this, the Department has also provided invaluable assistance in the international border area, the GRP, Revenue Department, IGNP, Forest, etc. The care and maintenance of the equipment is handled by a fully equipped and modern workshop. It undertakes the specialised and complex tasks of repair, testing and modification, installation of towers and fabrication of antennas, masts, etc.
